Statement of Belief

We consider liberty of thought under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to be essential to Christian belief and practice. Therefore we encourage the unhindered study and open discussion of Scripture. We uphold the individual’s freedom of conscience in seeking to determine and obey the will of God. The following statements are taken from multiple denominations that we have looked over and agreed upon, derived from our understanding of Scripture. 2 Corinthians 3:17-182 Timothy 2:15Romans 12:2Ephesians 4:3-615Romans 10:172 Timothy 3:16-17

God

We believe in one God, infinite and perfect, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe who exists eternally in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — with distinct personal attributes — and desires to share His love in a personal relationship with everyone. 1 Timothy 1:17Deuteronomy 6:41 Kings 8:271 John 1:5Genesis 1:1-2Acts 17:24-2528Psalm 90:1-2Matthew 28:19John 3:16Isaiah 57:152 Peter 3:9. He is an intelligent, spiritual, and personal Being, the Creator, Redeemer, Preserver, and Ruler of the universe. God is infinite in holiness and all other perfections. God is immortal, all-powerful, all-knowing, above all, and ever present. He is infinite and beyond human comprehension, yet known through His self-revelation. God, who is love, is forever worthy of worship, adoration, and service by the whole creation. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; John 3:16-21; 2 Corinthians 1:21 – 22.) To Him we owe the highest love, reverence, and obedience. God now dwells in all believers.

The Father

We believe in God the Father, who is sovereign over all, and is loving and just as He forgives the repentant and condemns the unrepentant. 1 Corinthians 8:6Ephesians 4:6Ezekiel 33:112 Thessalonians 1:6-8John 5:24John 3:16-18.God the eternal Father is the Creator, Source, Sustainer, and Sovereign of all creation. He is just and holy, merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. (Genesis 1:1; John 3:16-21; 14:9; 1 Corinthians 15:28; 1 Timothy 1:17; 2 Peter 3:1-16; 1 John 4:8; Revelation 4:11.)

The Son

Christ is the eternal Son of God. In His incarnation as Jesus Christ He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. Jesus perfectly revealed and did the will of God, taking upon Himself human nature with its demands and necessities and identifying Himself completely with mankind yet without sin. He honored the divine law by His personal obedience, and in His substitutionary death on the cross He made provision for the redemption of men from sin. He was raised from the dead with a glorified body and appeared to His disciples as the person who was with them before His crucifixion. He ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God where He is the One Mediator, fully God, fully man, in whose Person is effected the reconciliation between God and man. He will return in power and glory to judge the world and to consummate His redemptive mission.

We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His vicarious sufferings and atoning sacrifice through His shed blood, His bodily resurrection, His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and His personal return in power and glory.

Jesus Christ is Savior, Baptizer with the Holy Spirit, Healer, and our returning King.

The Holy Spirit

We believe in God the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, who gives spiritual birth to believers lives within them, and empowers them for witnessing and service.  John 14:163:5-814:17Romans 5:51 Corinthians 12:4-72 Peter 1:20-21John 16:7-11. Through illumination He enables men to understand truth. He exalts Christ. He convicts men of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. He calls men to the Saviour, and effects regeneration. At the moment of regeneration He brings every believer into the Body of Christ. He cultivates Christian character, comforts believers, and bestows the spiritual gifts by which they serve God through His church. He seals the believer unto the day of final redemption. His presence in the Christian is the guarantee that God will bring the believer into the fullness of the stature of Christ. He enlightens and empowers the believer and the church in worship, evangelism, and service.

Psalms 51:11139:7ff.; Isaiah 61:1-3Joel 2:28-32Matthew 1:183:1612:28-3228:19Mark 1:10,12Luke 1:354:1,18-1911:1312:1224:49John 4:2414:16-17,2615:2616:7-14Acts 1:82:1-4,384:318:1710:4415:2816:619:1-6Romans 8:9-11,14-16,26-271 Corinthians 2:10-143:1612:3-11,13Galatians 4:6Ephesians 1:13-144:305:181 Thessalonians 5:191 Timothy 3:162 Timothy 1:142 Peter 1:211 John 4:135:6-7Revelation 1:1022:17.

We believe in the present-day ministry of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a holy life. Mercy Life Church believes that the purpose of the Holy Spirit is to point us to the Father, and a person filled with the Holy Spirit should never draw attention to themselves, away from worship or praise to the Father. God is a god of order – he brought order to the chaos in Genesis 1. Mercy Life Church believes in the Spiritual Gifts, including, but not limited to, prophecy, healing, and speaking in tongues, both in earthly and heavenly languages, and have decided that we will not tell a believer that their spiritual experience is not authentic, rather we ask believers to control themselves and not interrupt corporate worship or ministry. (Genesis 1, Exodus 31:1, Numbers 11:25, Romans 8:26-27, Romans 12:6-8, 1 Corinthians12:4-11, 1 Corinthians 14:1-25).

We believe that the Holy Spirit has the following gifts to bestow upon the believing church of the Lord Jesus Christ: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues, interpretation; that according to the degree of grace and faith possessed by the recipient, these gifts are divided to every man severally, as He, the Holy Spirit, wills; that they are to be most earnestly desired and sought after, in the order and proportion wherein they prove most edifying and beneficial to the church; and 4hat the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, should be put forth, cultivated, and diligently guarded as the resultant adornment, the constant, eloquent, and irrefutable evidence of a Spirit-filled life. (1 Corinthians 12:1-31, 1 Corinthians 14:12, Romans 11:29, Romans 12:6-8, John 15:8, Luke 3:9)

The Bible

The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is God’s revelation of Himself to man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It reveals the principles by which God judges us, and therefore is, and will remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried. Mercy Life Church in addition believes the Holy Bible is a combination of writings, historically accurate, and historically inspired documents, inspired by the Holy Spirit and written by man, as interpreted by man in the culture and time period in which they lived. The books of the Bible were canonized by man over a period of several centuries in councils. Exodus 24:4;  Deuteronomy 17:19Psalms 19:7-10119:11,89,105;  Isaiah40:8Jeremiah 15:1636:1-32Matthew 5:17-1822:29Luke 21:3324:44-46John 17:17Acts 2:16ff.; 17:11Romans 15:416:25-262 Timothy 3:15-17Hebrews 1:1-24:121 Peter 1:252 Peter 1:19-21; Acts 15.

The great principles of God’s law are embodied in the Ten Commandments and exemplified in the life of Christ. The Ten Commandments express God’s love, will, and purposes concerning human conduct and relationships and are binding upon all people in every age. The Ten Commandments are the basis of God’s covenant with His people and the standard in God’s judgment. Through the agency of the Holy Spirit they point out sin and awaken a sense of need for a Saviour. This obedience develops Christian character and results in a sense of well-being. It is evidence of our love for the Lord and our concern for our fellow human beings. The obedience of faith demonstrates the power of Christ to transform lives, and therefore strengthens Christian witness. (Exodus 20:1-17; Psalm 19:7-11; Matthew 5:17-20; 22:36-40; John 14:15; Romans 8:3-4; Ephesians 2:8-10; 1 John 2:3; 5:3; Revelation 14:12.)

Mankind

We believe that mankind was created in the image of God and is therefore the noblest work of creation. We believe that human beings have moral responsibility and are created to enjoy both divine and human fellowship as children of God. Genesis 1:26-27Psalm 8:3-9Micah 6:8Matthew 5:44-481 John 1:3John 1:12 Man and woman were made in the image of God with individuality, the power and freedom to think and to do. Though created free beings, each is an indivisible unity of body, mind, and spirit, dependent upon God for life and breath and all else. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they denied their dependence upon Him and fell from their high position. The image of God in them was marred and they became subject to death. Their descendants share this fallen nature and its consequences. They are born with weaknesses and tendencies to evil. But God in Christ reconciled the world to Himself and by His Spirit restores in us the image of the Creator. Man are called to love God and love one another, and to care for their environment. (Genesis 1:26-28; 2:7, 15; 3; Psalm 8:4-8; 51:5, 10; Jeremiah 17:9; Acts 17:26-28; Romans 5:12-17; 2 Corinthians 5:19-20; Ephesians 2:3; 1 John 3:4; 4:7-21)

Sin and Salvation

We believe that sin is disobedience to God and failure to live according to His will. Because of sin all people have separated themselves from God. We believe that because we are sinners, we are in need of a Savior. We believe that salvation from sin and death is the gift of God by redeeming love accomplished by Christ’s death and resurrection, and is received only by repentance and faith in Him. We believe that all who repent of their sin and receive Christ as Savior will not be punished at the final judgment but enjoy eternal life. 1 John 3:4-5Romans 3:23-25Isaiah 59:21 John 1:8-10Romans 5:6-8Romans 6:23Hebrews 10:10-141 Peter 1:3John 3:16-1836Ephesians 2:8-9John 14:6Matthew 25:41-46Romans 5:10

Salvation involves the redemption of the whole man, and is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, who by His own blood obtained eternal redemption for the believer. In its broadest sense salvation includes regeneration, justification, sanctification, and glorification. There is no salvation apart from personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord.

A. Regeneration, or the new birth, is a work of God’s grace whereby believers become new creatures in Christ Jesus. It is a change of heart wrought by the Holy Spirit through conviction of sin, to which the sinner responds in repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Repentance and faith are inseparable experiences of grace.

Repentance is a genuine turning from sin toward God. Faith is the acceptance of Jesus Christ and commitment of the entire personality to Him as Lord and Saviour.

B. Justification is God’s gracious and full acquittal upon principles of His righteousness of all sinners who repent and believe in Christ. Justification brings the believer unto a relationship of peace and favor with God.

C. Sanctification is the experience, beginning in regeneration, by which the believer is set apart to God’s purposes, and is enabled to progress toward moral and spiritual maturity through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in him. Growth in grace should continue throughout the regenerate person’s life.

D. Glorification is the culmination of salvation and is the final blessed and abiding state of the redeemed.

Genesis 3:15Exodus 3:14-176:2-8Matthew 1:214:1716:21-2627:22-28:6Luke 1:68-692:28-32John 1:11-14,293:3-21,365:2410:9,28-2915:1-1617:17Acts 2:214:1215:1116:30-3117:30-3120:32Romans 1:16-182:43:23-254:3ff.; 5:8-106:1-238:1-18,29-3910:9-10,1313:11-141 Corinthians 1:18,306:19-2015:102 Corinthians 5:17-20Galatians 2:203:135:22-256:15Ephesians 1:72:8-224:11-16Philippians 2:12-13Colossians 1:9-223:1ff.; 1 Thessalonians 5:23-242 Timothy 1:12Titus 2:11-14Hebrews 2:1-35:8-99:24-2811:1-12:8,14James 2:14-261 Peter 1:2-231 John 1:6-2:11Revelation 3:2021:1-22:5.

We believe that the salvation of sinners is wholly through grace; that we have no righteousness or goodness of our own wherewith to seek divine favor, and must come, therefore, throwing ourselves upon the unfailing mercy and love of Him who bought us and washed us in His own blood, pleading the merits and the righteousness of Christ the Savior, standing upon His word and accepting the free gift of love and pardon. (Ephesians 2:8, Romans 3:10, Romans 3:23, Isaiah 64:6, John 6:47, Ephesians 2:13, Romans 6:23)

We believe that upon sincere repentance, godly sorrow for sin, and a whole-hearted acceptance of the Lord Jesus Christ, they who call upon Him may be justified by faith, through His precious blood and that in place of condemnation they may have the most blessed peace, assurance and favor with God; that with open arms of mercy and pardon the Savior waits to receive each penitent who will in unfeigned contrition and supplication for mercy, open the door of his heart and accept Him as Lord and King. (1 John. 1:9, Romans 5:1-2, Romans 8:1, Luke 1:77-79, John 6:37)

We believe that the change which takes place in the heart and life at conversion is a very real one; that the sinner is then born again in such a glorious and transforming manner that the old things are passed away and all things are become new; insomuch that the things once most desired are now abhorred, while the things once abhorred are now held most sacred and dear; and that now having imputed to him the righteousness of the Redeemer and having received of the Spirit of Christ, new desires, new aspirations, new interests, and a new perspective on life, time and eternity, fills the blood-washed heart so that his desire is now to openly confess and serve the Master, seeking ever those things which are above. (John. 3:3, 2 Corinthians. 5:17, Galatians 2:20, Romans 3:24-25, Psalm 1:1-2)

Eternal Life

We believe that Jesus rose from the dead and lives eternally with the Father, and that He will come again with power and great glory. We believe that eternal life begins in knowing God through a commitment to Jesus Christ. We believe that because He died and lives again, resurrection with spiritual and imperishable bodies is the gift of God to believers. 1 Corinthians 15:3-420-23John 14:1-3Matthew 24:30Titus 2:13John 17:31 John 5:11-131 Corinthians 15:42-44John 10:27-28John 6:40 We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost: they that are saved unto the resurrection of eternal life, and they that are lost unto the resurrection of eternal damnation.

God, in His own time and in His own way, will bring the world to its appropriate end. According to His promise, Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly in glory to the earth; the dead will be raised; and Christ will judge all men in righteousness. The unrighteous will be consigned to Hell, the place of everlasting punishment. The righteous in their resurrected and glorified bodies will receive their reward.

Isaiah 2:411:9Matthew 16:2718:8-919:2824:27,30,36,4425:31-4626:64Mark 8:389:43-48Luke 12:40,4816:19-2617:22-3721:27-28John 14:1-3Acts 1:1117:31Romans 14:101 Corinthians 4:515:24-28,35-582 Corinthians 5:10Philippians 3:20-21Colossians 1:53:41 Thessalonians 4:14-185:1ff.; 2 Thessalonians 1:7ff.; 21 Timothy 6:142 Timothy 4:1,8Titus 2:13Hebrews 9:27-28James 5:82 Peter 3:7ff.; 1 John 2:283:2Jude 14Revelation 1:183:1120:1-22:13.

The wages of sin is death. But God, who alone is immortal, will grant eternal life to His redeemed. Until that day death is an unconscious state for all people. When Christ, who is our life, appears, the redeemed, both the resurrected and the alive, will be glorified and caught up to meet their Lord. (Job 19:25-27; Daniel 12:2, Daniel 12:13; John 5:28-29; John 11:11-27; Romans 6:23; 1 Corinthians 15:51-54; Colossians 3:4; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17; 1 Timothy 6:15.

On the new earth, in which righteousness dwells, God will provide an eternal home for the redeemed and a perfect environment for everlasting life, love, joy, and learning in His presence. For here God Himself will dwell with His people, and suffering and death will have passed away. The great controversy will be ended, and sin will be no more. All things, animate and inanimate, will declare that God is love; and He shall reign forever. (Isaiah 35; 65:17-25; 2 Peter 3:13; Rev. 11:15; 21:1-7; 22:1-5.)

We believe that hell is a place of outer darkness and deepest sorrow, where the worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched; a place prepared for the devil and his angels, where there shall be weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth, a place of grief and eternal regret on the part of them who have rejected the mercy, love and tenderness of the crucified Savior, choosing death rather than life; and that there into a lake that burns with fire and brimstone shall be cast the unbelieving and they who have rejected and spurned the love and sacrifice of a bleeding Redeemer, — passing the cross to their doom, in spite of every entreaty and warning of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 13:41-42, Revelation 20:10-15, Revelation 14:10-11, Matthew 25:41, Matthew 25:46; Mark 9:43-44, Ezekiel 33:11, Luke 16:25-26)

The Church

We believe that the church of God is all believers gathered by the Holy Spirit and joined into one body, of which Christ is the Head. We believe that the local church is a community of believers organized in covenant relationship for worship, fellowship and service, practicing and proclaiming common convictions, while growing in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We believe in the priesthood of all believers and practice the autonomy of the local congregation, as we seek to work in association with others for more effective witness. Acts 20:281 Corinthians 12:131427Romans 12:4-5Colossians 1:18Acts 2:42Ephesians 2:19-22Romans 15:5-7Ephesians 4:11-162 Peter 3:181 Peter 2:4-10Matthew 18:20Hebrews 10:24-25. We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Baptism

We believe that baptism of believers in obedience to Christ’s command is a witness to the acceptance of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. We believe in baptism by immersion as a symbol of death to sin, a pledge to a new life in Him. Romans 6:3-4Matthew 28:19-20Acts 2:41Colossians 2:12Romans 6:11Galatians 3:26-27. While the word baptize comes from the Greek word baptizo meaning to immerse, Mercy Life Church believes, that as the act is symbolic, that if you are in a place where it is impractical to immerse (such as lack of water or contaminated, polluted, dirty, and / or unsafe water sources, mental or physical disabilities), that sprinkling is okay, but if at all possible, baptism should be by immersion, as much of the imagery is lost in sprinkling.

The Lord’s Supper

We believe that the Lord’s Supper commemorates the suffering and death of our Redeemer until He comes, and is a symbol of union in Christ and a pledge of renewed allegiance to our risen Lord. Mark 14:22-25Matthew 26:26-291 Corinthians 10:16-1711:23-30. Mercy Life Church believes in open communion, meaning you do not have to be a member of our church to join us in Communion. We also believe that something happens in Communion that is more than something simply symbolic, as Jesus did not say “The bread is like my body and the wine is like by blood” but instead says “Ther bread IS my body and the wine IS my blood”. While we do not believe in transubstantiation, we do believe something more, that we cannot explain, happens in Communion, and we have decided to use the phrase “Mystery of the Eucharist” to describe this.

Sabbath

We believe that the Sabbath of the Bible, from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday, is sacred time, a gift of God to all people, instituted at creation, affirmed in the Ten Commandments and reaffirmed in the teaching and example of Jesus and the apostles. We believe that the gift of Sabbath rest is an experience of God’s eternal presence with His people. We believe that in obedience to God and in loving response to His grace in Christ, the Sabbath should be faithfully observed as a day of rest, worship, and celebration. Genesis 2:2-3Exodus 16:23-30Exodus 20:8-11Matthew 5:17-19Mark 2:27-28Luke 4:16Acts 13:1442-4416:11-1317:2-318:4-11Ezekiel 20:19-20Hebrews 4:9-10John 14:15Isaiah 58:13-14Luke 23:56. Mercy Life Church is not opposed to churches that meet on Sunday, and if we eventually have to go to multiple services, we may introduce a Sunday service. Mercy Life Church has a personal conviction about meeting on Saturday, but we believe that all man should take a Sabbath at least one day a week, and not everyone is able, or comfortable, with doing it on Saturday, and we are okay with that.

Evangelism

We believe that Jesus Christ commissions us to proclaim the Gospel, to make disciples, to baptize and to teach observance of all that He has commanded. We are called to be witnesses for Christ throughout the world and in all human relationships. Matthew 24:14Acts 1:8Matthew 28:18-202 Corinthians 4:1-25-61 Peter 3:152 Corinthians 5:17-20Ephesians 6:14-20

Our Lives

We believe the full gospel includes holiness of heart and life, healing for the body and baptism in the Holy Spirit. Mercy Life Church believe it is a spiritual gift that some receive, but not all, and the Holy Spirit gives different gifts to different people – 1 Corinthians 12:1-11). 2 Peter 3:11-14; Acts 15; Romans 6.

Judeo-Christian

The gospel came to the Jewish people first and then from them to the nations. By loving the Jewish people and embracing the Jewish roots of the Christian faith, we’re bringing the gospel back to the people through whom it originally came. Mercy Life Church does not believe in replacement theology. Mercy Life Church supports Israel and the Jewish people. Mercy Life Church has decided to observe Passover (Sedar), and we will recognize (and possibly do something) for Pentecost (Shavuot), Purim, the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) and Hanukkah. Other feast days may be added as we study this more.

Marriage

Marriage is a biblical institution established by God as described by Scripture. We believe the biblical ideal for marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment. Accordingly, this church’s pastors and staff will not officiate in same-sex unions or same-sex marriages, nor will its property or resources be used for such purposes.
